In the past 20 years, the nonperforming loan (NPL) market has changed from a small, fragmented market into a global, robust, market. Competition among investors to acquire NPLs has intensified in many markets, NPL transactions are completed more quickly, and transaction activity is at a 20-year high as banks continue to sell NPLs to clean up their balance sheets and meet more stringent global capital standards. Now that things are going well, there is a risk that governments and banks could become complacent, resulting in a new wave of NPLs. Governments must remain vigilant in addressing NPL issues, and banks must institute prudent risk management policies to prevent a recurrence of such problems.
