最近看到人们都在聊精算和金融工程。我也来聊聊这话题。

精算和金融工程用到的内容有相似处，但是本质不同。
精算是是个standardized procedure。需要科学，但是是被阉割了的科学。精算师只需知道how it works而不用了解why it works.精算师工作的challenge在于creating business friendly solutions, 而远不是innovation。精算从学科角度是统计学的在business的一个应用。因为这种统计的应用被standardize成一个procedure，然后被广泛应用了，也就成了今天的精算。不难想象，如果你是statistician，你可以设计出千千万万个统计方法来给保险定价，算准备金。但是因为历史原因，监管便利性，精算成了行业标准。精算师就像技工，学会了一个统计方法，反反复操作这个方法来解决问题。所以说熟练是精算王道，经验造就精算大师。简而言之，精算不是一个科学，而是一项技术。

金融工程 本质是工程，这就涉及到design和implementation的问题。就是说你不但要知道how it works, why it works，你还要能都design new techniques来解决问题。这都离不开扎实的理论功底，stong research background和一个innovative mind.

纠正一个好多人犯的错误：读金工就是quant了。那还读金工干嘛呢? 读金工不就是为了做quant吗？well, that is why i usually dont recommend Financial engineering master programs. If you have no industry experience or are not super good at math, the chances are Financial engineering masters will be a waste of time and money for you. In fact, if you are not supper smart and do not have tons of industry experience, you will probably never get into a top financial engineering program.  


好多人说精算和quant很相似其实原因也简单。如果你只看看金融工程master课程和精算作比较，这是个很容易得出的理论。金工 master 不等于quant。 in fact, it is far from being a REAL quant.
你可以把金融工程master program理解成quant的摇篮，也就是说里面都是BABY quant。这样一来和精算考试自然交集就大了。
industry中的quant主要是应用数学phd或者applied math很多的工科phd  或者machine learning/data mining computer scientist.
从industry角度看，quant明显和精算是两种animal
