Lecture 1: Introduction to International Finance
· International finance is an important and fascinating subject in economics and business management, particularly in considering the rapid growth of international trade and investment, and increased mobility of capital around the world. With China’s accession to the WTO, they become even more important and urgent.
· International finance is obviously very important for multinational corporations that engage in international business and commerce. Indeed, it is relevant even for purely domestically oriented companies which sells in the domestic market and using only domestic inputs. For example, if the domestic companies compete with others that use inputs from abroad or sell in the international market, exchange rate changes will affect the cost and the profit of the latter and thus affect the profitability of the domestic companies.
· An obvious difference between domestic business (trade and investment) and international business is that different currencies are used in different countries, whereas a single national currency is used in domestic business.
