“Three Essays on Monitoring and Corruption” (CommitteeChair: Marcus Berliant)
Research Interests
My researchinterests are in the areas of law and economics, economic development, institutional economics, and transition economics, with a focus on issuesrelated to China’s economic reform and transformation. Inparticular, I adopt the applied microeconomic approach to empirically explorethe patterns in China’s economic growth during the reform era, oftentimes usinglarge-scaled Chinese firm data sets. When needed, I also rely on cross-countrydata sets for comparative studies.
Previously I have studied law and regulation in theUnited States, corporate governance in Chinese listed firms, as well as effectsof foreign direct investment (FDI) on Chinese firms. My more recent work hasfocused on firm financing and industrial clustering in China, as well as theeffects of value added tax rebates on export volume and U.S. anti-dumpingduties’ impact on Chinese firms’ productivity. Currently I am working on threeclosely related research projects: (1) the evolution of law, regulation, politics, and other institutional arrangements in China during and prior to itseconomic reforms; (2) Chinese private entrepreneurs and their businessenvironment; and, (3) the effects of institutional innovations on firm growthand economic development in China.
