Improving your spelling may take time, but the following steps can make this task a lot easier.
1. Use a spell checker.
When you write on a computer, use your spell checker. It will correct most misspellled words and also identify many typos, such as transposed or omitted letters. Keep in mind, however, spell checkers have limitations. THey do not identify typos that create other words (then/than, form/from, or big/beg, for example) or words that you have used incorrectly (their/there or its/it's, for example). For this reason, even if you use a spell checker, you still have to know how to spell.
2. Proofread carefully.
Even if you have used a spell checker, always proofread your papers for spelling before you hand them in.
3. Use a dictionary.
As you proofread your papers, circle words whose spellings you are unsure of. After you have finished your draft, look up these words in a college dictionary. It will give you the spelling of a word, tell you how to pronounce the word, and show you which syllables to stress.
4. Keep a personal seplling list.
Write down all the words you misspell. If you keep a writing journal, set aside a few pages in the back for your personal spelling list. Whenever your instructor returns one of your papers, look for misspelled words - usually circled and marked sp. Add these to your personal spelling list.
5. Look for patterns in your misspelling.
Do you consistently misspell words with ei combinations? Do you have trouble forming plurals? Once you figure out which errors you make most frequently, you can take steps to eliminate them.
6. Learn the basic spelling rules.
Memorize the spelling rules in this chapter, especially those that apply to areas in which you are weak. Remember that each rule can help you spell many words correctly.
7. Review the list of commonly confused words in 34E.
If you have problems with any of these word pairs, add them to your personal spelling list.
8. Make flash cards.
If you consistently have trouble with spelling, put individual words on 3- by 5-inch cards. You can use them to test yourself periodically.
9. Use memory cues.
Memory cues help you remember hwo to spell certain words. For example, remembering that defeinte contains the word finite wil lhelp you remember that definite is spelled with an i, not an a.
