Final countdown: Vikings warriors are preparing for the end of the world

Viking warriors have begun to arrive in York in preparation for the end of the world.

'Norsemen' from across the UK and further afield are converging on the historic Yorkshire town as Ragnarok, the final bloody battle predicted in Norse mythology approaches on February 22.

Believers say that when the fateful day arrives Earth will split open, unleashing the inhabitants of Hel.

The wolf, Fenrir, son of Loki, will break out of his prison and the Midgard snake Jormungand will rise from the sea.

Nidhogg, the dragon of the underworld, will gnaw（咬） at the world tree, Yggdrasil（雷神电影里的那个树）, until it groans（叹息） and wilts.

Then as the ice giants of Jotunheim come thundering over the horizon, the dead heroes of Valhalla will descend from heaven to fight them.

These events were prophesied（预告，prophecy是预言的意思） by the god Odin who had hung himself from Yggdrasill for nine days so he could die and be re-born with wisdom and foresight.

The apocalypse coincides with the 30th JORVIK Viking Festival, which is taking place in York until February 23.

Festival director Danielle Daglan said: "Ragnarok is the ultimate landmark in Viking mythology, when the gods fall and die, so this really is an event that should not be underestimated."

Great Odin's ravens（我感觉这里并不是说大家都是奥丁的乌鸦，而是用的感叹词，就比如哈利波特系列里的感叹词是“梅林的胡子”~）! The world is set to end in 100 days but according to Norse mythology the mighty Thor could save the day.

Viking folklore（民间传说。lore是口头相传的学问的意思） had its own take（看法） on the apocalypse called Ragnarok which would involve gods smiting（重击、杀死） each other, the sky stained with poison and three freezing winters - so we're a third of the way there already.

Norse experts have calculated that the viking gods are going to start flinging magic hammers at each other on February 22 2014 as Thor's dad Odin gets mauled（袭击、撕咬） to death by a wolf which will get the ball rolling for the armageddon.

Skandinavian cultural boffins（从事研究工作的研究院） at York's Jorvik viking centre have heralded（预示、宣布。herald的名词意思是传令官，这词儿是从莎翁的Henry V里学到的~） the beginning of the end by blowing a sacred war trumpet.

Mythology states that the god Heimdallr（就是雷神电影里的那个黑人~ 北欧神话里是白人） would blow the magical Gjallerhorn to warn of Ragnarok which means Doom of the Gods. This will alert Odin's sons like Thor to the battlefield.

God of thunder, Thor has remained a cultural icon as a hero of Marvel comics most recently in the movie Thor: The Dark World.

Ancient Swedes, Danes and Norwegians believed that first a freezing winter would come, then all morality would disappear and fights would break out all over the world.

Then wolves would eat the sun and the moon and finally the daddy of gods Odin would bite the dust（倒在地上，一败涂地，死） at the fangs of another lupine（狼群的，是不是很像Harry Potter力Lupin的名字） menace（威胁、恐吓）.

After Odin's demise, the world will sink into the sea but then rise again as a new utopia（乌托邦）.


Smells fishy: 18 foot oarfish could signify Odin's death

Jorvik viking centre boss Danielle Daglan said: "In the last couple of years, we’ve had predictions of the Mayan apocalypse, which passed without incident, and numerous other dates where the end of the world has been pencilled（做记号） in by seers（先知）, fortune tellers and visionaries.

"But the sound of the horn is possibly the best indicator yet that the Viking version of the end of the world really will happen on 22 February next year."

The legend states that "the first to notice shall be man, brother will fight brother and all the boundaries that exist shall crumble."

Viking experts have pointed out that boundaries are already crumbling through social networking, so if Loki and Thor do start brawling in your back garden maybe consider closing that Twitter account.

Ms Daglan said: "The idea that “boundaries that exist shall crumble” could be said to be about the Internet age, where you can communicate with millions of people simultaneously around the world thanks to the global rise of social media."

Another part of the legend suggests that the Midgard Serpent will rise up from the ocean much like the two huge fish which appeared on a California beach last month.
