PhD-position New incentives for sustainable agriculture and ecosystem servicesVU University Amsterdam is one of the leading institutions for higher education in Europe and aims to be inspiring, innovative, and committed to societal welfare. It comprises twelve faculties and has teaching facilities for 25,000 students.  

The Institute for Environmental Studies is the oldest interdisciplinary environmental research institute in the Netherlands, founded in 1971. It is part of the VU’s Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences and consists of 5 departments: Environmental Policy Analysis, Chemistry and Biology, Environmental Economics, Environmental Geography and Water and Climate Risk. The departments work closely together on a host of global and local environmental problems, nationally and internationally, including climate change and land use policy, ecosystem services and biodiversity, and water resources management.

Job / Project Description
The position is part of the project FATIMA: FArming Tools for external nutrient Inputs and water MAnagement funded under the European Research Program Horizon2020. The project aims to develop strategies for optimizing the use of external input (nutrients, water) in European agriculture. The PhD position focuses on the design of novel economic instruments in policy mixes that incentivize the delivery of positive externalities such as ecosystem services and biodiversity in rural areas and minimize negative externalities from modern agricultural practices. The successful candidate will work on the design and evaluation of the performance of new incentive structures that maximize positive and minimize negative externalities from agriculture.

Cross-discipline collaboration
We offer a unique opportunity for a Phd student to engage in international interdisciplinary research focusing on the delivery of ecosystem services and biodiversity in a key sector in Europe. The successful candidate will work closely together with other European universities and research institutes. The aim is to improve our understanding of the role of economic incentives in policy mixes to reduce environmental pressures on agricultural land and enhance the delivery of ecosystem services and biodiversity.

Requirements
• Candidates should hold a MSc Degree in Environmental, Agricultural or Behavioral Economics.
• Excellent ability to communicate in written and spoken English. No prior knowledge of Dutch is required.
• Ability to work in a dynamic team of international collaborators.

Particular preference will be given to candidates with a strong institutional and/or experimental economics background with some experience in the field of (economic) policy instruments.

Further particulars
The appointment will be for a period of 4 years. The initial contract is for 1 year. Upon successful (standard) evaluation after 9 months the contract will be extended with another 3 years.
