Knowledge-sharing routines are linked to sustainable
learning or problem-solving capacities of cooperating firms
and are necessary for improving exchange performance. Von
Hippel (1988), for example, demonstrated that in the wire
termination equipment industry the majority of (product and
process) improvements could be traced back to suppliers’
initial suggestions. Other studies confirm that a production
network with superior knowledge-sharing mechanisms among
suppliers and manufacturers will be able to ‘‘out innovate’’ a
production network with less effective knowledge-sharing
routines (e.g., Helper, 1991; Powell et al., 1996). These studies
suggest that firms’ partners (e.g., suppliers) are the most
important sources of new ideas and information. Thus, an
effective process of sharing information and know-how
between interacting partners can be reflected in value-enhancing and increased performance (Grant, 1996)
