Abstract:       Argues thatthe gold standard is the only monetary regime consistent with thephilosophy of free enterprise and assesses the contributions ofFriedman, Mundell and Hayek to monetary theory as supporters of thefree market but opponents of the gold standard. Critically reviews thebasic ideas of each and notes that Greenspan, while apparentlyendorsing the gold standard, has not actually used his position aschairman of the US Federal Reserve System to move towards it. Listssome economists who support both free enterprise and the gold standardas a “vital aspect of political economy.
