Product Description
Money, Financial Instability and Stabilization Policy consistsoforiginal articles by leading post Keynesians, Kaleckians andotherheterodox economists from the developed and developing world.

Post Keynesian literature has long been associated with the studyofmoney, financial markets and financial instability. Indeed, thisisperhaps the area to which post Keynesians have made thegreatestcontributions. Thecontributors to this volume present an overview ofthe latest researchon monetary theory and policy, financial markets, and financialinstability coming out of the post Keynesian school ofthought. Theyprovide an indication of the wide-ranging interests andof the trulyinternational scope of post Keynesian research. The firsthalf of thevolume is theoretical, while the second half includespapers that areeither empirical or more focused on specific concerns.

Thisvolume presents the latest research into money, financial markets, andfinancial stability—areas that have long been of interest to PostKeynesians and to which they have made significant  contributions.

The papers were presented at the 8th International Post KeynesianWorkshop in 2004 and illustrate the broad scope of Post Keynesianinterests and research. Topics include: the evolution of theinternational financial system since the breakdown of Bretton Woods;the deficiencies of macroeconomic models in their treatment of moneyand the role of government; a critique of the standard policy ofraising interest rates to contain inflation; the ‘confidence’ strategyversus the ‘credibility’ strategy of post-war monetary policy; thelinks between Post Keynesian research and the original Institutionaleconomics associated with Veblen; today’s capitalist economy as afinancial bubble, where much of savings and debt is used to purchasefinancial assets rather than invest in productive capacity; theexistence of unit roots as supportive of Keynesian theory; theoligopsonistic power possessed by Mexican commercial banks in theirdomestic-deposit market; a critique of the shington Consensus approachto macroeconomic policy and development; the role of equity financein the ‘Tequila’ crisis recovery of the 1990s; and the evolution of thefinancial system in  new EU member states such as the Czech Republic,Hungary, and the Baltic states.

This book will find an appreciative audience in economists generallyaswell as post Keynesian, other heterodox economists andmacroeconomistsspecifically.
