【双周论坛】5月12日：Intergenerational Transmission of Human Capital and Wage Inequality

【本期主题】 Intergenerational Transmission of Human Capital and Wage Inequality Why does earning exhibit considerable intergenerational persistence? The labor literature empirically tests different mechanisms through which earning abilities are passed on from parents to children. We develop and estimate a theoretical model that considers three mechanisms of inter-generational transmission of human capital: (i) biological persistence in learning ability; (ii) parental investment in child’s human capital; (iii) higher teaching productivity of parents with more human capital. Within our framework, we find that learning ability show remarkable intergenerational persistence, and parental investment also plays an important role---both time investment and goods investment. On the other hand, we find little support for the mechanism that parents with more human capital are more productive in teaching children.

朱国钟，北京大学光华管理学院应用经济学系助理教授，毕业于美国德州大学奥斯丁分校，并获得经济学博士学位。主要研究项目有：人力资本的代际传递、房地产投资和收入不确定性的关系、收入不平等和消费不平等、时间配置、资产交易成本和家庭资产组合等。主要研究成果有："European public real estate market integration,"  with Jian Yang and James Kolari,  Applied Financial Economics, Vol. 15, 2005
