In this case, the owner pay wage to the manager, and the manager put effort into management and monitoring. To the owner, the reward paied to the manager is a kind of cost, just like the wages paid to the workers. Moreover, the owner and the manager have their own objectives: the owner maximizing profit (assumed); the manager maximizing his utility, which depends on the monetary reward given by the owner and his effort put into management.
