张五常教授在西安交大讲课的时候，推荐了16篇经典文章，并且为每一篇文章都写了导语，特此上传，以供诸位学习参考。
因为最近比较忙，所以只能趁闲暇时候上来，希望各位见谅。

The methodology of science is something that every economics student should know a little about——but no too much!
The subject can be enormously difficult; beyond some point the marginal cost of learning more about it will exceed the marginal benefit.

For Chinese students learning economics, the knowledge of methodology is doubly important because they have been brought up with heavy doses of metaphysical dorctrines

Armen A. Alchian, "Uncertainty, Evolution and Economic Theory," J. of Polit. Econ. (June 1950)

This classic paper by Alchian sparked of a great debate on methodo;ogy of economics in the 1950s andi the 1960s. the paper contributed an approach to economic reasoning which have become increasingly influential through time.

One point made by Alchian ,that under uncertainty it would be meaningless to talk about maximization ,is not quite correct. Advances made since the publication of this paper have rendered that point invalid. This little flaw does not, however, reduce the significance and correctness of the central thesis, namely , compmpetition and the survival of the fittest go far to explain economic behaviour in society.

Ernest Nagel, "Assumptions in Econimic Theory," Amer. Econ. Rev. (May 1963)

If Alchian's peper on "evolution" is said to have sparked off the methodology debatr in economics, then this paper by Nagel must be regarded to have rosolved it. Nagel is a master logician, and arguemants by logician are never too easy to understand. The central point made by Nagel here , however, is simple. If "A implies B", then to say "since A is not true,B is therefore not true" is wrong.

This logical error is known as the fallacy of denying the antecedent, (In logic,A is called the antecedent and B the consequent). That is , if "A implies B ", then "not B implies not A"; however, "not A"implies nothing. In other words, if the assumption A is wrong, the conclusion B may still be right. Nagel's paper also contributes significantly by pointing out that the word "assumption" can mean many different things.

第四节：可能被事实推翻的重要性
假若读者问：在整个科学方法的结构中，哪一点最重要？我会毫不犹豫地回答：理论的推测一定要「可能被事实推翻」。不可能被事实推翻的理论，是没有解释能力的。可以说，所有实证科学（Empirical Science）的主旨，是要创立一些可能被事实推翻的句子或言论来作推测的。换言之，科学不是求对，也不是求错；科学所求的是「可能被事实推翻」！可能被事实推翻而没有被推翻，就算是被证实（confirmed）了。前文我说过，推测现象的发生与解释现象是同一回事。推测可能被现象推翻，但却没有被推翻，现象的发生证实了推测，那么现象就算是被解释了。当然，一个现象可以有多个理论解释。我将会在下文谈及不同理论的取舍问题。

但这里我要说的重点是：不可能被事实推翻的理论之所以没有解释能力，是因为这样的理论不可以被事实验证。套套逻辑不可能错。既然不可能错，又怎可能被事实推翻呢？一个可能被事实推翻的理论，是一定要可以在想象中是错了的。套套逻辑不可能错，连在想象中是错了也不可能，所以没有解释力。除套套逻辑外，我们还可以指出其它四种情况，可使理论不能被事实推翻，因而废了理论的解释力。这些是第五节及第六节的内容。

可能被事实推翻是重要的，但假若一个理论的推测被事实推翻了，我们只有两个选择。其一是将现有的理论放弃，另创理论；其二是设法附加条件以资挽救，但正如前文谈特殊理论时提及过，这样挽救理论须付代价，而代价是不应过大的。今天可能被事实推翻而没有被推翻的理论，明天可能晚节不保——这是科学进步必有的过程。但今天还没有被推翻，在今天也就有其用场。解释现象的用场是衡量理论的最重要准则。理论是不应该以对或错来衡量的。

以句子或言论作推测，是以可以被验证的含意（testable implication）为主。这些含意是由理论推出来的。在逻辑学上，最重要的含意规则很简单：假若A的发生含意B的发生（A→B），那么B的不发生就含意A的不发生（Not B→Not A）。这是最基本的验证方法。举一个例：假若下雨（A），天上就一定有云（B），其含意是，没有云（Not B）就一定没有雨（Not A）。假若没有云但却有雨，那么下雨（A）必定有云（B）之说就被事实推翻了。
验证一个理论含意的唯一办法，是以事实反证。这点很重要。要验证下雨必定有云这个含意（验证A→B），是要以没有云就没有雨（Not B→Not A）的事实作反证。以没有雨就没有云（Not A→Not B）来验证，是一个很常见的谬误（在逻辑学上，这谬误叫做Fallacy of Denying the Antecedent）。A的发生含意B的发生，A的不发生完全不含意B会怎样。说没有A就没有B，是谬论，但在谬论中过日子的人何其多也！例如，经济学假设每个人都会为自己争取最大利益（A），所以在某些局限条件下，每个人都会努力工作（B）。有些低手认为人不一定争取最大利益（Not A），所以在同样条件下每个人不一定努力工作（Not B）；这是谬论。

一九四六年，一个名为纳斯德（R. A. Lester）的经济学者，发表了一篇举世瞩目的文章。他调查研究波士顿的私营运输公司雇用司机（驾驶员）的政策之后，就直指经济学上大有名堂的「边际生产定律」是错了的（「边际」一词，过些时我才作阐释，该词于此并不重要）。根据经济学的假设，每一个私营企业会设法争取最高的利润，所以在雇用货车的驾驶员时，在边际上一个驾驶员的生产贡献所值，是会等于他的工资（这就是「边际生产定律」其中的一个含意）。纳斯德遍问波士顿的运输公司的主事人，发觉他们往往不管「争取最高利润」为何物，所以就说，边际生产定律是错了：驾驶员的工资，不会等于他们在边际上的生产价值的。这就好象上文所说的没有雨就没有云的谬误。
我可举一个有趣（而非事实）的例子，来说明「A→B，所以Not A→Not B」这个谬误。话说有一群人，每个都是白痴，对世事茫然不解。经济学者却假设他们每个人明智地争取最大的利益。事实上，这些人都是白痴，所以这个经济假设显然是错了。这些白痴听说汽油站很好玩，于是每个人都开办油站了。因为是白痴，他们之中有些把油站建在荒山之上，有些建在密林之中，也有些建在海上的。没有公路汽车经过，油站怎可以生存呢？但他们当中有几个同样的白痴，却胡里胡涂地把汽油站建在公路旁。过不了多久，适者生存，不适者淘汰，只有在公路旁建油站的白痴能生存。事实上，他们是不知自己所为的。经济学者假设他们懂得怎样争取最大利益，显然是错了的，但留存下来的油站，却刚刚与争取最大利益的假设不谋而合。假设白痴懂得怎样争取利益虽然是错了，但却准确地推测了白痴建油站在公路旁的行为，这些行为于是就被解释了。说他们不知所为，所以油站不会建在最有利可图的地方，是谬论。

中国古代有一个传说，认为月蚀是一只很大的天狗把月亮吃掉。这当然是无稽之谈。但中国人曾以这无稽的假设，准确地推测了月蚀所发生的时刻！这个月蚀时刻理论是错了的，但却大有解释（推测）能力，算是有用的理论了。我们今天的月蚀时刻理论代替了中国古时的，不是因为今天的对而昨天的错，而是今天的有较大的一般性，可以解释天体中的其它现象。说不定到了明天，今天的月蚀时刻理论也可能被证实是错了的。但对或错都无伤大雅。套套逻辑是绝对的，但没有解释力。有解释力的理论可能错，但更重要的是可能被事实推翻。不管是对还是错，有解释力的理论就是有用的理论。说没有天狗吃月亮，所以不能以此准确地推测月蚀的发生，是谬论。我们要将问题分得一清二楚。

补充第一篇，科学哲学确实太艰深，波普尔的专著基本很难读懂，库恩《科学革命的结构》北大翻译版不知所云，台湾版本翻译得较好，不过不容易找到，在这方面我读过的较为入门浅显易懂的只有牛津通识系列的《科学哲学》，中英文对照版本。或许能作为一个导读。

第四篇4. Armen A. Alchian, "The Meaning of Utility Measurement," Amer. Econ. Rev. (March 1953)

Utility in modern economics has nothing to do with happiness or satisfaction. This new approach was first powerful set forth in the brilliant paper by E.E.Slutsky, a Russian economist, and debate on the subjuct bacame popular after the father of computer, the great mathematician, John von Neuman, collaborated with the economist, O.Morgenstern , in a profoundly difficult book entitled <The Theory of Games and Econimic Behavior>.

This paper by Alchian brings a difficult and highly mathematical subject to a level of understanding of non-technical students. The central message is simple enough: utility is nothing more than an arbitrary assignment of numbers for the purpose of predicting or explaining human behaviour.
