Thank you for submitting your manuscript"Deeper Research on Consumer Choice and the New Ideas Brought toEconomics" (MS 20190440) to the JPE. Unfortunately, I do not have goodnews: I am rejecting it for publication.
I have had a chance to read your paper, and there is much to like. Youpostulate several outcomes that a good theory of this choice should yield, andyou develop things from there. There are a number of interesting insights inyour paper, and I hope that you will be able to publish the contribution in adecent journal.
However, I feel that the paper is notquite the level of breakthrough that we seek to publish in the JPE. I couldn't quite convince myself that currentpreference theory does not already encompass much of what you are seeking toaccomplish. Suppose a consumer consumes the quantities x, y, z of threedifferent goods. Suppose that goods x and y are perfect substitutes, while xand z or y and z are not. It seems to me that a preference specification like
u(x,y,z) = log( x + A y ) + log( z)
with A a parameter would go a long waytoward what you have in mind. More generally, one could use, e.g.,
u(x,y,z) = ( (x + A y)^a + z^a)^(1/a)
At the minimum, one certainly wishes tounderstand quickly what your paper accomplishes, which this approach would not.Perhaps all this can all be sorted out, but even a substantial revision may notcross the admittedly high bar of publication in the JPE.
Given these concerns and oursometimes-lengthy refereeing process, I have decided not to send yourmanuscript out for review. I am truly sorry that I could not reach a morepositive conclusion. Please take into account that well less than ten percentof all our submissions will eventually get published in the JPE. Your paperwill no doubt find an excellent home. I hope that this outcome gives you achance to submit to another journal quickly. I certainly wish you much successwith it and hope that this negative decision does not deter you from sendingyour best work to the JPE in the future.
Sincerely,
Editor
